Thamsanqa Bhengu

I belong to the disciple called Educational Leadership, Management and Policy (ELMP) that is located in the Faculty of Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). My highest qualification is Doctor of Education. My activities in the Faculty include teaching, research, research supervision and coordination of programmes and modules. Currently, besides coordinating the entire programme called ‘ACE School Leadership’, which is a two year diploma for practising principals, I also teach and coordinate two modules, ‘Understanding School Leadership and Management’ and ‘Managing organisational system, Physical and Financial Resources’ to ACE students. I also teach leadership modules ‘Introduction to Educational leadership and management’ to BEd (Hons) as well as ‘Educational Leadership and Management’ to MEd students. I am also involved in the supervision of students’ research projects at all levels (BEd-Hons, MEd, and PhD) at UKZN and do evaluations of MEd and PhD research projects of students from other universities.

My interest area is leadership generally and educational leadership and management in particular. In addition, issues of leadership development and its connection with institutional growth fascinate me, and my research has focused on this aspect. My research has also covered issues of leadership in schools, traditional leadership and possible linkages between educational leadership, traditional leadership and local government. Before I joined UKZN, I worked as a researcher for research organisations, such as the Centre for Educational Research Education and Policy (CEREP) which was located at the ex-University of Durban-Westville. I also worked for the Centre for Education Policy Development (CEPD) as a Senior Researcher. My work prior to that was school-based and I was a school principal for 10 years.

I have attended and presented papers at various conference and symposia, nationally and internationally. Some of these conferences include the following:

  • Kenton Conference held at Goudini Spa, Worcester(30 October-02 November, 2003).
  • South Africa-Sweden Systems Research Collaboration Symposium held at Örebro University-Sweden (24-28 September, 2005).
